It all started with the plan of having a road trip to somewhere we’ve never been to. The destination? We were unsure until we started looking about on the map. We wanted to stay in Scotland and for some reason Ullapool popped up and after some research we decided that it would be our home for the weekend. This story goes back some time but we enjoyed our first visit so much we’ve been back and will no doubt visit again in the future.
Where is Ullapool?
About Ullapool
Wikipedia has an excellent page about Ullapool : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ullapool
[blockquote source=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ullapool”]
Ullapool is a town of around 1,300 inhabitants in Ross-shire, Scottish Highlands. Despite its small size it is the largest settlement for many miles around and a major tourist destination of Scotland. The North Atlantic Drift passes Ullapool, bringing moderate temperatures. A few Cordyline australis or New Zealand cabbage trees are grown in the town and are often mistaken for palms.
On the east shore of Loch Broom, Ullapool was founded in 1788 as a herring port by the British Fisheries Society. It was designed by Thomas Telford. The harbour is still the edge of the village, used as a fishing port, yachting haven, and ferry port. Ferries sail to Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides.
Ullapool has a strong reputation as a centre for music, the arts and performance.

What’s in Ullapool?

There are lots of different establishments each bringing their own stamp to the town. From bars, to butchers, to a fish and chip shop. We have visited most places within the town and in no particular order would easily recommend visiting :
- The Seaforth pub and Fish and Chip Shop
- The Arch Inn Restaurant that does amazing food and has a sitting area overlooking the bay.
- The Ferry Boat Inn.
- The Gallery Cafe.
- Caledonian Hotel
- Working harbour

Why Ullapool?
Having never been so far up north of Scotland it would be a great base to go out and explore places on the north coast like Durness (future blog post). There are lots of beautiful scenic areas around and out of Ullapool. Many, many areas you can go and venture out to. It’s always that moment you see a tweet or a blog post that tells you a magnification beach or historic building was only a 10 minute drive from the road you were on. Next time.
Where did you stay in Ullapool?
Just as you’re coming in from Leckmelm on the A835 there lies a lovely guest house call the Dromnan guest house. This guest house is only a 5 minute walk from the town centre with offroad parking. Both times we have visited we have stayed here. On both occasions we were looked after very well. Rooms are clean, modern and the owner Mrs MacDonald is very nice and informative :).

Beautiful Ullapool

You can sit back and watch the world go by. The following album can be found also on flickr(I will be adding more over time) :
